The Healing Benefits of Meditation

The healing benefits of Meditation are many and varied.  For instance, most people who meditate over a period of time experience a slower resting heartbeat, lower blood pressure, and generally have far less mental chatter going on, which results in less stress. And of course, less stress translates into fewer stress related illnesses.  I was once married to a woman who was diabetic, and yet her blood pressure and heartbeat were that of a person who was perfectly healthy.  In fact, her doctor once told her that both were actually lower than was normal in a healthy person much younger than she was.  When he asked how she did it.. her reply was simply: “Meditation”. With practice, Meditation enables a person to go deeply into the Self, and to experience the profound effects of coming into contact with the Silence and Stillness that exists within all of us. It also enables one to connect with the healing power with each of us.  There have been many stories of people who have miraculously healed themselves through meditation and visualization.  Both require practice to master, but with time it can be done. These stories are not the exception, we are all capable of accomplishing such things.  The only reason we do not is because we don’t try.  Jesus once said “The Kingdom of Heaven Is Within”.. and whether you are Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Jew or Islamic.. it is true. The center of our Being is in our heart, and to access that we need to go within, and to go within we need to meditate and go beyond the mind and it’s incessant chatter. So as you might imagine, the benefits of meditation go far beyond healing the body.  When we are connected to the Source of our Being within, we naturally become more intuitive, and our mental chatter slows and eventually stops.  And, we also learn to “drop down” into our hearts and live joyfully. Meditation isn’t just a fad or something for people from the east.. it’s for everyone.. and it can benefit everyone.  As a meditator for over 30 years I know and can attest to it’s power and ability to heal one’s life. But don’t take my word for it.  Try it for yourself.  If you stick with it you will find out as I did that that life becomes calmer and happier, and that miracles can indeed happen.
